CIVIL PROTECTION FORUM
2024

3-5 June 2024
Brussels, Belgium

What was the goal?

This session related to a synthesis report on the review of past wildfire events that Firelogue has been developing, jointly with FirEUrisk and the Green Deal Innovation Actions.

Several recent reports reviewed past fire events in Europe including extreme events such as those in Portugal in 2017 (e.g. Castellnou et al. 2022; Almeida et al. 2022; Pronto et al. 2023 ). However, the reports vary in their geographic focus (from Mediterranean to the whole of Europe), the type of events analyzed (large/critical vs. extreme events), the temporal scope (annual analysis vs. insights over the past seven years) and the types of conclusions and recommendations they draw (from the local, operation context to European investment funds and support mechanisms).

This mosaic review of events and recommendations currently lacks a synthesis in the form of joint and coherent recommendations towards science, policy and practice at multiple geographic scales and towards different stakeholders, ranging from responder organizations to land managers and infrastructure providers. Our work hence synthesized the insights from existing research in order to develop such recommendations towards different stakeholders.

The report builds on desk research but should be coupled with a consultation of wildfire experts.

The main objectives

the presentation of interim results of the synthesized reports
their discussion with the wildfire experts in order to validate and expand the insights
and recommendations
The discussion focused on eight central clusters:

1 – Northern European Challenges
2 – Funding
3 – Risk awareness & communication
4 – Governance
5 – Urban planning & Landscape Management
6 – Housing & Self-protection
7 – Training & Guidelines
8 – Response
